Marseille

Urban   Coastal   Beaches

Marseille's waterfront centers on the Vieux Port (Old Harbor), where fishing boats dock beneath the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean and the modern MuCEM (Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée). The Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde crowns a hilltop south of the harbor, its golden Madonna visible across the city. The Panier neighborhood, with narrow streets and pastel buildings, climbs from the Vieux Port and contains the 17th-century Hôtel de Ville and the Museum of Old Marseille. La Canebière, the main boulevard, stretches inland from the harbor past the Palais Longchamp, a 19th-century palace housing the Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum. The Corniche Kennedy runs along the southern coast, connecting beaches and calanques (rocky inlets) accessible by foot or boat. The Château d'If, a 16th-century fortress on an island, inspired Alexandre Dumas's *The Count of Monte Cristo* and can be reached by ferry from the Vieux Port.
