Palawan Island

Palawan Island, located in the western Philippines, is a destination centered on Puerto Princesa, the capital city, and the surrounding archipelago. The Underground River in Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park features an 8.2-kilometer navigable underground river through limestone caves, accessible by boat tours departing from the city's tourism office. El Nido, on the northern tip of the island, serves as a gateway to the Bacuit Archipelago, where limestone cliffs frame Shimizu Island, Miniloc Island, and Entalula Beach; visitors reach El Nido via the Pan-Philippine Highway or domestic flights. The Coron area, accessible by ferry or flight, centers on Coron Town and offers wreck diving at Japanese World War II shipwrecks like the Barracuda and Irako, plus freshwater lakes including Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon. Puerto Princesa's city center includes the Palawan Museum on National Highway, showcasing indigenous Palawano artifacts and local history. Sabang Beach, 50 kilometers north of Puerto Princesa, provides access to the Underground River and serves as a base for island-hopping tours. The island's interior remains largely forested, with limited road infrastructure outside the main coastal towns.
