Retirees, remote workers, and families come to Kyrenia for the same reason: the sea sits close to daily life, and the town still feels lived-in rather than packaged. Start at Kyrenia Harbour, where fishing boats bob beside cafés, then walk up to Kyrenia Castle and the Shipwreck Museum for the 4th-century BC wreck that gives the place its maritime spine. The lanes behind the waterfront, especially around Dr. Fazıl Küçük Caddesi and the streets climbing toward the old quarter, are where you notice bakeries, hardware shops, and apartment balconies with laundry in the sun. For a slower day, head west to Bellapais and the Abbey of Bellapais, where the stone arcades look over the coast and the village cafés fill with people lingering over coffee. A short drive inland brings you to St. Hilarion Castle, the craggy hilltop fortress that rewards the climb with wide views over the Five Finger Mountains and the plain below. If you want a beach break, Escape Beach Club and Alagadi Turtle Beach pull different crowds: one for easy swimming and sunbeds, the other for quieter sand and the chance of seeing nesting turtles in season. Kyrenia works best when you move between the waterfront and the hills. Lunch at Niazi’s on the harbour, a drink at The House on the hill above town, and an evening stroll back along the marina give the city its rhythm. The pace is unhurried, but the details are sharp: the smell of grilled halloumi, the sound of scooters on narrow streets, and the light on the castle walls just before sunset.
