Hastings began as a fishing village on Barbados's south coast, its economy built on the daily catch and the rhythms of the sea. Today it remains fundamentally a working waterfront town, though tourism and residential development have gradually reshaped its edges. The Hastings beachfront stretches along the Caribbean, where locals still launch fishing boats at dawn and the sand fills with swimmers by afternoon. Worthing Beach, just west of the town center, draws the steadiest crowds and has the infrastructure to match—restaurants, bars, and water sports operators line the shore. The town itself clusters around Main Street and the surrounding grid of residential roads, with a modest commercial core that serves residents far more than tourists. St. James Church anchors the spiritual center, while the Hastings Police Station and various small shops define the everyday rhythm. The reef-protected waters make swimming safer here than on the island's rougher Atlantic side, and the consistent trade winds keep the heat manageable even in summer months.
