Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata sits on the Dominican north coast where many visitors conflate it with Punta Cana—a mistake that misses the point entirely. This port city has the grit and salt-worn character of a working harbor, not a resort enclave. The Malecón runs along the waterfront with colonial-era buildings, street vendors, and the actual rhythm of Dominican life; the cable car up Pico Isabel de Torres offers views across the Atlantic and the Cordillera Septentrional mountains. The Old Town's narrow streets around Calle Duarte hold the Fortaleza San Felipe, a 16th-century fortress now a museum, and the Catedral de San Felipe Apóstol with its ornate wooden interior. Cofresi Beach lies just east of the city center, less manicured than resort beaches but where locals actually swim. The Ocean World Adventure Park sits on the eastern edge if you want marine attractions, though the real draw here is wandering past the fishing boats and into small comedores where the food tastes like someone's grandmother made it that morning.
