Virgin Gorda

Beach   Coastal   Beaches

Virgin Gorda’s story is written in stone and salt. Long before the yachts arrived in North Sound, the island’s copper mines at Little Dix Bay and the old workings near Copper Mine Point drew workers to this rugged corner of the British Virgin Islands; today, the same coastline pulls in travelers for a very different reason. The Baths at Spring Bay still set the tone: giant granite boulders, sea pools, and narrow passages that feel more like a natural maze than a beach. From there, the island opens into quieter stretches like Savannah Bay and the hill roads above Spanish Town, where the pace drops the moment you leave the ferry dock. Most visitors base themselves around Spanish Town, Leverick Bay, or North Sound, then fan out by taxi, boat, or rental car. Spanish Town is the practical center, with the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, grocery stops, and easy access to the ferry terminal; North Sound is where the water takes over, with Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock, and the marinas that frame the bay. For a slower day, head to Gorda Peak National Park for the island’s highest views, then continue to the Copper Mine National Park on the southeastern tip, where the ruins sit above a dramatic shoreline. If you want a beach that feels far from the postcard circuit, Savannah Bay and Pond Bay reward the extra drive with long, open sand and far fewer footprints.
