Valle de Los Chillos

Valle de Los Chillos sits 2,350 meters above sea level in the southern highlands of Pichincha Province, making it Ecuador's second-largest urban valley after Quito itself. The valley stretches across eight parishes—Amaguaña, Conocoto, Guangopolo, La Merced, Píntag, Sangolquí, San Fernando, and Tumbaco—each with distinct character. Sangolquí, the commercial heart, anchors the valley with its central market and colonial-era church facing the main plaza; locals navigate the steep Calle Ambato and Calle Pichincha for shopping and dining. The valley's agricultural legacy persists in flower farms and vegetable plots that checker the hillsides, particularly visible from the Pan-American Highway that bisects the region. Tumbaco, to the north, has transformed into a weekend retreat for Quiteños, with restaurants and small hotels clustering around its town center. The Río Chillos carves through the valley floor, creating a natural boundary between the eastern and western slopes—a geography that historically isolated communities but now defines the valley's topography for hikers and cyclists exploring the surrounding páramo.
