Mombasa is Kenya's primary coastal city and a major East African port, characterized by its Swahili architecture, historic Old Town, and Indian Ocean beaches. The Old Town features narrow streets lined with carved wooden doors, the Fort Jesus fortress (built by the Portuguese in 1593), and the Mombasa Cathedral. Key neighborhoods include Diani Beach to the south—a 25-kilometer stretch with coral reefs and water sports—and Nyali Beach to the north, which offers calmer waters and resort-style accommodations. The city center around Moi Avenue contains the Mombasa Central Market, where vendors sell fresh produce, spices, and local crafts.
